I made a quilt for my friend Tessa for Christmas. Tessa, for my last 2 or 3 birthdays, has given me books that I have read, loved, and re-read. She has perfect taste in books, and by that I mean nearly identical to mine. Every time she gives me a recommendation, I know it will be wonderful. She is my book finder, and I usually can't return the favor, even though I often wish I could. Instead, for Christmas, I gave her a whole library of precariously stacked books made of fabric.
I used a linen blend for the background, which I'm officially in love with, and a big selection of green/navy/teal fabrics for the books. The back is all one print, this beautiful green honeycomb.
I've never made something that was as unstructured at this. The instructions basically boil down to "cut a bunch of strips of fabric in different widths and sew them together." I know it can get way crazier with those improvisational quilts, but this was plenty crazy enough for me, for now.
As usual, I embroidered a short+sweet message on the back. My embroidery's gotten so much better since I started practicing! (Imagine that!)
It measures about 60x60, and I can verify firsthand that it is a great size for cuddling on the couch with a good book (or a good tv show).
