Chris recently had his re-enlistment ceremony with the Army, signing up for another four years, so I thought it'd be a good chance to share these great photos of him at work. He is in the United States Army Ceremonial Band "Pershing's Own". How's that for a mouthful? He is permanently stationed at Fort Myer in Virginia. A large part of his job is playing at funerals in Arlington National Cemetery. As you might imagine, that is a heavy job. I've observed him at work once or twice, and I am so glad his band does what they do. It's a really nice ceremony.
In addition to the funerals, they also perform at retirement ceremonies, wreath-laying ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and basically any Army-related ceremony in DC.
I don't usually get to watch him at work, and any photos I take are usually from far away and include the back of someone's head. (Or occasionally, of a paused tv screen.) So when my friend Lauren sent me these photos from the PBS Memorial Day Concert I was really excited. Lauren's in the US Army Field Band and their photographer Rob McIver took these great shots. Chris is third from the left in the photo above.
I also loved this video the band posted of our friend Drew. It was taken during a snowstorm a few weeks ago (obviously). When it's below freezing, the band doesn't play because the valves on their instruments freeze, but the buglers still play Taps.
